    Pickleball Clinic

If one only looked at the numbers of players attending the pickleball clinics put on by Dennis Forbes, then the individual improvements in their pickle play may be over looked. As for me, I knew I had reached a point where my game was not improving. No matter what I tried to do, the status remained unchanged. Along comes Dennis and points out some of (not all) the bad habits I had developed. I didn't know Dennis was a religious man, but he told me my feet were like a tree planted by the water, I could not be moved (or would not move). So he devised this (devilish) exercise designed to completely destroy my legs, making them like two rubbery u-jointed stems, complete with all the aches and pains that go with that exercise. After only three lessons, I know my game is improving, and I look forward to each clinic as a hi-lite of my week. If you want to improve your game, here is the opportunity for you to do just that. A shout out to Dennis, who has more to offer than just a training clinic. Thanks Dennis,(you of the few compliments), you make my day! - Jan
P.S. Clinics are held each Monday, 10:00 at Hobble Creek YMCA. Don't forget to help Carson offset our pickleball court expenses.

    Congratulations!

I recently heard that Carson Spencer is the new Idaho regional ambassador to the NW region usapa. He is taking over from Gary Robbins who is now an ambassador at large. Congratulations to you both for the great job you are doing to promote the game in Idaho. Again, my personal congratulations to you. Jan

  9. As seen on USAPA website:

Out Having A (pickle)ball (Jul 2, 2010 McMinnville, OR, www.newsregister.com) While the confines of the gym can be stifling and the exercises strenuous, a group of McMinnville adults have found the perfect way to exercise — while having more than a little fun in the process.
Webb joined the USA PIckleball Assocation as an ambassador, which entails advertising and promoting the sport.

“I love promoting this,” Webb said. “I’m passionate about this. I think it’s great for the community.”

Any adults interested in learning more about what this sport is all about are welcome to come join the fun, Webb said.

The group has about 20 active players, split evenly between men and women, and 30 on its mailing list. Paddles are provided for anyone who needs one.

For more information, contact Patti Webb at (971) 237-2360.

  11. Lewiston Senior Games!

Talk about being slow on the court, how about slow when posting an exciting eventlike the Lewiston Senior Games! Of course, I am not alone being tardy when reporting on the most fun tournament that I have participated in. First, Steve and Susie were out of town and could not send pictures of the good times. Second, when they did send them, I could not figure how to open the thumbnails on this computer. (Relying on my old proverb that "ignorance and perseverance win out over stupidity every time")I was finally able to get them opened and placed on this blog.
Steve Judy and his team deserve a shout out for a great tournament,as usual. Steve has run this tourney for the last three years and possibly longer. We not only enjoyed the competition, we had a great social barbecue, lots of laughs and the usual ribbing that goes with people who enjoy and have fun together playing the great game of pickle!
Lewiston is an interesting town and area. The landscape is beautiful and the old downtown has an enteresting aura! Lot's to do and see! If you want to have a really fun week end, mark your calenders for the next tournament in Lewiston. A shout out to a great group of people who go out of their way to make things happen! Jan

  12. Submitted by Ramona and Steve Boone, USAPA Ambassadors for Colorado Springs, CO

This was one of the stops to meet & greet other Pickleballers listed in places to place. Although our chosen profession is travel writing and photography, we love to play pickleball. During the summer of 2009 as we traveled the country in pursuit of wildlife photographs and other story material, we started checking out "Places to Play" outside of our home turf of Colorado Springs. We wanted to see how easy it was to arrange a game and we also wanted to get familiar with different styles of play.

In February, we journeyed to Port Angeles, Washington, and met another enthusiastic group! We arrived on a Sunday when no games were scheduled. The local pickleballers usually play indoors in the winter, but there were no indoor facilities available on Sunday. Since we'd emailed the local contacts with our interest and arrival time, they'd sent a note to their group asking for outdoor players on an off day. Despite the heavy mist, twenty people showed up! We played several times that week and even converted our local friends, Dick and Suzy, into addicts - after one day they ordered their paddles and are now gung-ho pickleballers.

  13. Guess who's coming to town?

I heard it from Carson, so it has to be true. A woman that I have admired for the last three or four years is coming to our town Boise for the Idaho Senior Games. She is arguably one of the best women pickle players on the circuit. I am not so sure I should limit that statement to "women". She can hold her own with the best of us of the male gender. Her name is Pat Carroll, she hails from San Diego, CA, where I am told. she holds court with her entourage. I first watched her play in the Palm Desert games when she showed up with an enthusiastic group of women players. I needed a mixed doubles partner and was handed one of her band. When we were playing, I never had a cheering section before (or since), but her girls were lined up cheering on my partner. I think I was smitten from that day on. When you meet her, you will understand my admiration. Here is a woman who not only plays well, but plays the crowd well too. Mark my words, you will be impressed! Now, lucky Carson is her partner for the mixed doubles, but as he told me on the court today, she wont allow him to play poorly, and I believe him! Just wish she were a few years older and could be my partner.

    New Times

It has been suggested that we change our start times due to the increase in temperatures.

So, Effective Saturday July 10th our "DROP IN" START TIMES WILL BE 9:00AM.
Our Monday "DROP IN " clinic will resume July 12th and again will Start at 9:00AM Sharp.
Our Wednesday "DROP IN" play will start at 9:00AM.
Our "DROP IN PLAY" on Wednesdays will change to 7:00PM effective day will be Wednesday July 14th.

Come on out and "GET IN THE GAME".

    THANKS

  14. Family Day at Nampa

After playing with the family last Saturday, and reflecting on the fun we had, I realized that this was what the game was designed to do; Let all age groups in the family come together and enjoy.

RV'ers picked up the game and made it what it is today. So the game sorta morphed away from an all family game, a game where all age groups in a family could participate and just have fun.

Because my grandchildren had such a great time (that is all they have been talking about)I decided to make Saturday the Family game day in Nampa. Bring your family, children, grand children and young friends out each Saturday at 9:00 am on the courts behind the Nampa Rec Center parking lot. We have two full courts available, and there is no charge. Been thinking of some way to keep those kids busy? Here it is! See you then, Jan

    Donnely pickleball

For those of you who would like to play PB in the Donnelly, McCall resort area, a quick up date. Reesa Brown, Diane Baron, Cathy Miller and I, with a few local on lookers played our first PB on the Donnelly Public Courts, Friday and Saturday. Total success! We had a good time, the weather was perfect and the courts worked out great. We will start our Clinic's for the local players in a week or so and hope to make PB mainstream in Donnelly by the end of summer.

Our schedule for use of the courts in Donnelly is : Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, from Sunrise to Sunset. If your in the area come play.

    Newbies

Had a great Saturday morning playing with three newbies in Nampa. Todd Winbigler and his two children, Alexandria (13) and Nicolas (11), were on the courts learning the nuances of our rather addictive game. They all displayed the symptoms of addictiveness as they played with their grandfather (me) and Mel and Sandra Cope. This was the game as it was originally designed. Young and old playing together in a game all can play. The weather was perfect except for the wind which caused it's usual missed shots. Looks like Saturday at Nampa is going to be a fun time for the whole family. If you have children and/or grandchildren who want to play, bring them out to Nampa for a very fun family outing. For more info, call me, Jan Johnson at 208 442 0883, and we will set up a game. Jan

  16. International Pickleball Week -- April 11-17, 2011
Fast Growing Sport of Pickleball Celebrates Worldwide with Week of Activities
ShareThis Email PDF Print .Seattle, WA (Vocus/PRWEB) March 21, 2011
The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) is pleased to support International Pickleball Week, April 11-17, 2011. A court game of angles and strategies, of position and speed, pickleball is enjoying huge increases in popularity with seniors, school kids and families. During the week starting April 11th the USAPA will be holding events throughout the United States to celebrate the sport and introduce it to new players.
Pickleball is a fun court sport played on a badminton-sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and wood or composite paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles. It can be played indoors or outdoors, is easy for beginners to learn – but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In addition to being fun, the game has developed a reputation for its friendly and social nature.
Pickleball is played by all ages. It is a popular sport in schools and senior centers. The smaller court size and inter-generational appeal makes it perfect for backyard courts. It has great health and fitness benefits for all. It is also becoming popular with persons with disabilities.
To celebrate pickleball at the local level many of the over 300 regional and local USAPA Ambassadors will be holding clinics and tournaments.
“We are extremely excited about the second annual International Pickleball Week,” said Bill Booth, President of the USA Pickleball Association. “The sport of pickleball is really catching on across the world and is particularly popular with seniors. We intend to celebrate the growth of the sport with our fellow players throughout the world.”
The USAPA was created in 2005 to promote the sport. It maintains the official rules, sanctions tournaments, provides player rankings and produces the annual National Pickleball Tournament. It is run by a volunteer board of directors and supported by thousands of dues paying members.
The USAPA provides assistance through programs such as:

Ambassadors – over 300 regional and local ambassadors promote the sport at a local level, providing information and training.
Training Grants - The 2010 USAPA Grant program will provide funds to subsidize training programs for school students, local residents, organizations or individuals who are novices to Pickleball and do not belong to a Pickleball club or other organized group.
Industry Education – The USAPA provides speakers to introduce and demonstrate the sport to industry associations and other interested groups on a local, regional and national basis.
More information about the USAPA can be found in the media center at http://www.USAPA.org. Additional information and story ideas are available from David Johnson at (253) 854-0163 or media@USAPA.org.

  17. there are a dozen or so of us guys here on san juan island who have been playing pickleball for many years and more specifically every friday afternoon for the last ten years, rain or shine (snow is a bit of a problem though). we play doubles, shorten our games to seven points (must win by two) so that we all rotate in more often, and a skunk is 5-0. if you win three in a row with your partner then you get split up with two new players. if you win three sets of three games each with a different partner then everyone must take a knee in honor of your achievement. it works well. there does happen to be a little beer involved and perhaps some rough language but what the hell, most of us are in our fifties and we can do what we want. we are very competitive and would like to know when there are tournaments in the PNW. thanks. arrowhead@rockisland.com
